Market days still matter here - every Tuesday and Saturday, the historic centre comes alive with traders who've been working these streets for generations. Buckingham feels properly lived-in rather than preserved, with independent shops holding their own against the usual suspects. The town sits at the heart of some cracking countryside, where ancient woodlands like Leckhampstead Wood and Wicken Wood offer proper walking territory just minutes from the high street.

Stowe Landscape Gardens dominates the surrounding area, and for good reason. This 18th-century masterpiece sprawls across hundreds of acres, dotted with monuments that tell stories of power and politics. Captain Cook's Monument catches the eye from miles away, while the Gothic Cross and Captain Grenville's Column mark out walking routes through carefully planned vistas. Lord Chatham's Urn and the 2nd Duke's Obelisk might sound like footnotes, but they anchor some of the finest views in Buckinghamshire.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A421 cuts straight through, connecting to Milton Keynes in twenty minutes and Oxford in under an hour. Regular buses serve the surrounding villages, though having your own transport opens up the best of the countryside. The River Great Ouse meanders nearby, offering gentle towpath walks that most visitors never discover.

Staying at one of the local campsites makes perfect sense. Silverstone sits just down the road - race weekends transform the area, but the rest of the year it's surprisingly peaceful. Several working farms offer pitches, putting you right in the heart of this rolling landscape with its mix of pasture, woodland and historic parkland that's shaped English garden design for three centuries.
