Romano-British hut circle and enclosing bank

The ground here tells a story that's easy to walk past without noticing. What you're looking at is the remains of a Romano-British roundhouse - the kind of dwelling that would have housed a family around two thousand years ago, complete with its protective enclosing bank still visible as a low earthwork. Bishop Auckland sits about five miles south, but out here on the County Durham landscape, you get a proper sense of how these people chose their land.

There's not much to excavate in the imagination department. You'll see circular depressions in the ground, the outline of defensive banks, and if you're lucky with the light, the banks cast shadows that make the shape clearer. It's the sort of site that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than anyone expecting dramatic ruins. Allow twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're taking notes or photographs.

The value here is contextual. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Mickleton Mill, Westgate, or Leekworth are all within six miles - and you're already exploring the wider Durham countryside, it's absolutely worth the detour. Pair it with walks across the moors or a visit to Bishop Auckland's more substantial attractions. But it's not the sort of thing you'd drive an hour for on its own. Free access, naturally, and no facilities to speak of. Go in decent weather when the ground isn't sodden and the grass is short enough to actually see the earthworks.
