Cuthbert's Hill

The walk up Cuthbert's Hill rewards you with proper views across County Durham's moorland - the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people settled here centuries ago. It's not a mountain, more a rounded fell that takes the better part of an hour to climb from Bishop Auckland, but the effort pays off when you reach the top and can see for miles in most directions.

The hill itself is named after Saint Cuthbert, the early Christian monk whose presence echoes across this part of the North East. You're walking on ancient ground, which adds a layer of interest beyond the physical challenge. The ascent is steady rather than brutal, so reasonably fit walkers and older teenagers will manage it without complaint. Young kids might find it a bit of a slog, depending on their tolerance for uphill paths without obvious destinations to break up the journey.

What makes it work as part of a caravan park holiday is the accessibility - it's barely a drive from Bishop Auckland town centre, so you can combine it easily with other walks in the area. The nearby parks at Stanhope and Westgate make sensible bases if you're touring the Dales. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip including a breather at the top, and go early on a clear day when the visibility makes the walk genuinely worthwhile. Wet conditions and low cloud drain most of the appeal.
