Rimey Law

The walk up Rimey Law is over before you know it - more of a stiff hillside than a proper fell, but the views from the top make it worthwhile on a clear day. You're looking out across County Durham's high moorland, with Bishop Auckland visible in the distance below. The summit itself is nothing fancy, just open moorland and a trig point, but that's rather the point.

It's the kind of walk families can manage without fuss, and older kids won't complain about the duration. Allow ninety minutes to two hours there and back from the car park, depending on fitness and how long you linger. The ground gets boggy in patches after rain, so decent boots are essential rather than optional.

Walkers will appreciate the relative solitude - you won't be fighting crowds at the top like you do on some of the more famous peaks. History buffs might be interested in the mining heritage of the area; the surrounding landscape tells the story of County Durham's industrial past, though Rimey Law itself is simply moorland.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - White House & Hagg Bridge or Westgate are both within four miles - this makes a straightforward morning excursion before lunch. It's the sort of walk that fits neatly into a park holiday without eating up a full day. Not dramatic or challenging enough to be a destination in itself, but absolutely worth the detour if you're in the region.
