Old Rookhope ore hearth lead smeltmill

The Old Rookhope ore hearth isn't much to look at on first glance - just a grassed-over mound and some scattered stone foundations in the Weardale valley near Bishop Auckland. But once you realise what you're standing on, it clicks into place. This is where lead miners smelted their ore in the 18th century, part of a huge industrial operation that fed Britain's appetite for the stuff.

What remains is the actual hearth structure itself, remarkably intact considering it's been abandoned for over two hundred years. It's archaeology in its rawest form - no interpretation boards, no café, just the genuine article sitting quietly in the landscape. You can trace the old stone work, spot where the furnace would have been, and if the light's right, see the whole operation in your mind's eye.

History buffs will get the most from this one. The effort to walk out here won't pay off if you're after a quick photo stop - you need thirty minutes minimum, ideally an hour if you want to properly absorb what happened on this spot. It's free to visit, which is just right for something this raw.

Camp at Westgate Caravan & Camping Site or White House & Hagg Bridge, both within four miles, and you've got yourself a proper Pennine base for exploring the dale. Rookhope is worth a detour if industrial heritage gets you going, but don't expect manicured grounds or visitor facilities. What you get is the real thing.
