Rhinog Fawr

The walk up Rhinog Fawr isn't for the faint-hearted, but if you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Llanbedr, it's absolutely worth the graft. This 720-metre peak dominates the Rhinog range and the ascent is properly steep in places - loose rock, scrambling sections, the lot. You're looking at a solid three to four hours return from the car park near Llanbedr, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

What makes it worthwhile is the view. On a clear day you get panoramic sight lines across Snowdonia and down to Cardigan Bay - the sort of vista that makes your legs stop complaining about that final push. The summit itself is rocky and exposed, so weather matters; I'd avoid it in high wind or fog when visibility drops to nothing.

This is a walk for people who actually enjoy walking, not just the idea of it. Families with young children will struggle; teenagers and fit adults will have a proper adventure. Walkers passing through the area - perhaps visiting nearby Rhaeadr Nantcol Waterfalls - will find this a credible day out that doesn't require technical equipment, just decent boots and determination.

Start early, check the forecast, and bring water. The caravan parks dotted around Llanbedr at 4-5 miles distance make decent bases, though you'll need a car to reach the trailhead. It's free to climb, obviously, and there's no gate or admission required.
