Tumulus

Bronze Age burial mounds don't get much more atmospheric than this one perched above Llanbedr. The tumulus - essentially a stone cairn marking an ancient grave - sits on raised ground with proper views across the Ardudwy countryside towards the coast.

Walking up takes about fifteen minutes from the village, following a well-trodden path that's manageable for most families. The mound itself isn't huge - maybe twenty feet across - but there's something quite moving about standing where people mourned their dead four thousand years ago. Kids might need the historical significance explained, though they'll enjoy scrambling about on the stones.

What makes this spot special is the setting rather than the archaeology. On a clear day you can see right out to Cardigan Bay, with the Rhinogs rising dramatically behind you. It's free to visit any time, which is just as well since there's no visitor centre or facilities.

The tumulus works well as a short leg-stretcher if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Llanbedr. Lyons Sunnysands and Rowen Caravan Park are both within easy reach, making this an ideal morning walk before hitting the beaches. Allow an hour for the round trip, longer if you fancy bringing a picnic to enjoy the views. Not earth-shattering, but a lovely way to connect with North Wales' ancient past without breaking a sweat.
