Foel Ddu

The walk up Foel Ddu from Llanbedr is properly rewarding if you've got decent legs and don't mind a steep push. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards - nothing dramatic - but the views across to Snowdonia and down towards the coast make the effort worthwhile. Clear day, you can see for miles. Cloudy day, you're walking through mist and might wonder why you bothered.

This one's for walkers who actually want a walk, not a stroll. Families with young kids will find it a slog; teenagers who like a challenge will get more from it. The summit itself isn't a destination in the traditional sense - no café, no viewfinder, no much of anything really - just you, the wind, and a proper sense of having earned your view.

It's free, obviously. You'll want a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're not used to hill work. Start early if you're doing it in winter; the light goes fast and the paths aren't brilliantly marked. Wet weather makes it muddy and a bit treacherous on the steeper sections, so pick a decent day.

Fitting it into a caravan holiday works well - you're based somewhere like Shell Island or Min-y-don for the coast and beach time, then use a morning for this if the weather's cooperating. It's close enough to Llanbedr that you won't waste half a day driving. Not a showstopper, but a solid morning's activity if you're the sort who'd rather climb a hill than sit on the beach.
