Craig y Dinas Hillfort

Standing on this windswept hilltop above Llanbedr, you'll find the stone remains of an Iron Age settlement that once controlled the coastal plains below. Craig y Dinas Hillfort dates back some 2,000 years, though what survives today are mainly the defensive ramparts and wall foundations - enough to fire the imagination but not necessarily enough to hold younger children for more than half an hour.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the commanding position these ancient Britons chose for their stronghold. The views stretch across Cardigan Bay on clear days, making it obvious why this spot was picked for defence. Walking the perimeter takes about 20 minutes, and you can still make out where the original entrances would have been.

It's a proper climb to reach the site, so come prepared for a bit of a trek through rough grassland. The path isn't waymarked particularly well, but locals in Llanbedr can point you in the right direction. Free to visit, naturally, being open hillside.

Families staying at nearby Shell Island or Hendre Mynach Caravan & Camping Park could easily combine this with a coastal walk, though it's more of a detour for archaeology buffs than a must-see attraction. The fort works well as part of a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself.
