Redmire Hill

The walk up Redmire Hill from Skipton takes you through proper Yorkshire moorland, and the summit rewards you with views across Wharfedale that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's not a brutal climb - maybe forty minutes or so from the car park - but it's steep enough that you'll feel like you've actually done something.

What makes it worthwhile is the quiet. Unlike some of the honeypot peaks nearby, Redmire doesn't attract the crowds, which means you get the landscape to yourself more often than not. The moorland changes character through the year too. Spring brings the greens in, summer can be bracken-heavy, and autumn turns the whole place bronze and gold.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find the final push tedious, but there are spots to stop and scan for grouse or buzzards. History enthusiasts won't find much interpretation up there, but the views tell you something about why people settled the valleys below rather than up here.

It's free to walk, naturally, and you can go whenever you fancy. Spring and early summer are best for avoiding the worst of the wind and bog. Combine it with one of the caravan parks nearby - Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club or Wood Nook are both well-regarded and give you a proper base to explore the dale. If you're after a longer stay with more facilities, Howgill Lodge is slightly further out but worth the drive. The walk itself takes a couple of hours including time on top, so it slots neatly into a holiday morning before lunch.
