Red Bog Lake

The water at Red Bog Lake sits dark and still, surrounded by moorland that stretches toward the Mourne Mountains. It's a modest body of water - nothing dramatic - but the setting has real character, especially on a grey day when the bog grasses seem to absorb what little light there is.

This is straightforward walk territory. You can get round the perimeter in under an hour, though most people linger longer, wandering the boggy paths and taking in the views across toward Newry. It's the sort of place that feels properly remote despite being just outside town - which means it works well if you're based at Kilbroney Caravan Park or one of the glamping sites and need a quick leg-stretch that doesn't require a major expedition.

Historically minded visitors might find the bog landscape interesting - these areas tell you something about the local ecology and how the land has been managed over centuries. Walkers will appreciate it as a solid morning outing, especially if you're heading into the Mournes proper later. Families with young kids might find it a touch underwhelming after twenty minutes, though the bog itself is fascinating enough if they're into spotting plants and water birds.

There's no facility to speak of, so bring what you need. Timing-wise, go when you can - weather matters more than season here. Early morning or late afternoon often gives you the lake to yourself, which makes it worth the trip.
