Ratlock Hill

The walk up Ratlock Hill rewards you with proper moorland views that sweep across the Yorkshire Dales - nothing fancy, just honest fell scenery. It's the kind of peak that doesn't take all day but demands decent legs and a bit of grit on the climb itself.

From Skipton, you're well positioned for tackling this one. The ascent isn't technical, though the gradient is steep enough that you'll feel it in your thighs. Once you're up there, the vista opens out across rolling hills and scattered farmland, with the Dales stretching away in all directions. On a clear day you can see properly far.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted round here - Howgill Lodge and Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite are both within easy striking distance. You can knock it out as a morning walk and have the afternoon free, or pair it with other fells nearby. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the walk monotonous if they're not keen on climbing.

There's no visitor centre or facilities up top, so bring water and something to eat if you're stopping for a rest. The best light is usually late morning through early afternoon - come too late and you'll be rushing to get down before dusk. It's the sort of walk that won't blow your mind but won't disappoint either, and it fits neatly into a Dales break without dominating the itinerary.
