Ratherheath Tarn

A shallow moorland lake that doesn't announce itself - you turn a corner near Kendal and suddenly there it is, ringed by rough grassland and bracken. Ratherheath Tarn is the sort of place locals know well but visitors miss entirely, which is precisely why it's worth seeking out.

It's a proper fell tarn rather than a scenic postcard lake. The water itself is dark and peaty, reflecting the surrounding moorland in that moody way that makes you understand why the Lake District inspired so much Romantic poetry. You can walk right round it in maybe 45 minutes without pushing, taking in the open views across Cumbrian countryside. In spring the wildflowers appear - nothing fancy, but genuine fell flora.

Families with younger children might find it a bit quiet and isolated - there's no cafe, no facilities, no manicured paths. But serious walkers and anyone who prefers their landscape unvarnished will find it genuinely restorative. Photography types should come at golden hour when the light turns that moorland gold.

Camped at Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site or one of the other parks dotted around Kendal itself, Ratherheath Tarn works as a morning or afternoon loop before heading back for something more substantial. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a wider tarn-hopping day it slots in perfectly with the bigger attractions nearby. Free to visit, accessible most of the year though check conditions after heavy rain.
