Potter Fell

Potter Fell doesn't grab headlines the way Catbells or Helvellyn do, but that's precisely why it's worth the bother. This modest peak sits just south of Kendal, rising to 372 metres with views that punch well above its weight - you can see right across to the Pennines on a clear day, and the Lake District fells stack up impressively to the north.

It's a proper fell walk rather than a fell for fell's sake. The ascent takes roughly 45 minutes from the village of Crosthwaite, and the terrain is straightforward without being dull - bracken, grass, the odd rocky section. You won't find crowds here, which means you'll actually hear the wind and the birds. Families with teenagers will manage it easily; younger children might find the final push a bit steep, but nothing brutal.

The summit cairn is humble but the payoff is real. On a decent day, there's enough clarity to identify Morecambe Bay glinting to the south. It's the sort of walk you do when you're camping at Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site or staying near Kendal and want something quick without the graft of the bigger fells.

Allow two to three hours return, depending on pace and how long you linger. There's no café at the top, so bring a flask. Free to climb, naturally. Winter can be boggy lower down, so pick your weather. It won't be the highlight of your Lake District trip, but it's a solid morning well spent.
