Porth Tywyn Mawr

The rocky headland at Porth Tywyn Mawr juts out from Anglesey's northwestern coast near Holyhead like something the sea hasn't quite finished arguing with. It's a proper working landmark - the sort of place where you can see why sailors needed clear reference points long before GPS existed. What you're looking at is dramatic geology, not a visitor attraction with cafes and gift shops, which is exactly why it's worth the effort.

The walk down to the shore takes a few minutes from the car park, and the rocks themselves are genuinely striking. You can scramble about on the lower outcrops if the tide's out, though the sea moves fast here and you need to keep your wits about you. The views back along the coast towards Holyhead are excellent, particularly in that golden hour before sunset when the light hits the water properly.

This appeals most to walkers, photographers, and anyone who prefers landscapes to interpretation boards. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited - there's no real play element once you've clambered on the rocks for twenty minutes. Tide watchers and coastal path enthusiasts will get more from it.

It's free and accessible year-round, though winter storms can make it dramatic in a slightly intimidating way. Allow an hour if you're actually exploring the rocks. It slots well into a wider Anglesey coastal walk, sitting close to Sandy Beach and Penrhyn Bay caravan parks if you're based nearby. Not a destination in itself, but a proper part of understanding this coastline.
