Ponden Reservoir

The walk around Ponden Reservoir, just outside Keighley, is one of those proper moorland circuits that sneaks up on you - nothing flashy, but genuinely satisfying. You get a decent loop of a couple of miles with decent views across the water to the Pennine hills beyond, and the path is well-maintained enough that you won't spend the whole time picking through bog.

It's the sort of place walkers actually use rather than Instagram types, which means it stays relatively peaceful even on weekends. The reservoir itself is industrial in origin - a water supply for the mills - but that doesn't matter once you're out there. The landscape has reclaimed it. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; there's decent variety around the shoreline.

For families, it works best with kids aged eight or up who can manage the distance without constant complaints. Younger ones might flag before you've completed the circuit. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're not rushing, or an hour if you just want the quick walk. There's no café at the reservoir itself, so pack a drink.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Shay Gate Farm Campsite is closest at 5 miles - this makes an easy morning or late-afternoon outing. It pairs well with exploring Keighley's textile heritage or heading up into the moors proper. Worth doing, but go for the walk rather than expecting drama. It's honest, accessible countryside without pretension.
