Fernshaw Hill

Standing at 447 metres, this modest peak offers cracking views across the Pennine countryside without the crowds you'll find on the bigger fells. The walk up from the Keighley side takes about 45 minutes at a steady pace, following well-trodden paths through moorland that can get properly boggy after rain.

Families with older children will enjoy the sense of achievement - it's a real hill but not intimidating. The summit itself is nothing fancy, just a small cairn and some weathered stone, but the panoramic views stretching towards the Yorkshire Dales make the effort worthwhile. On clear days you can spot Pen-y-ghent in the distance.

Weather changes fast up here, so pack layers even on sunny days. The descent can be slippery when wet, and there's precious little shelter once you're committed to the climb. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to catch your breath at the top.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Upwood or Brown Bank Caravan Park puts you within easy striking distance. It pairs well with a day exploring the Brontë connections around Haworth, though the hill itself has more appeal for walkers than literary pilgrims. Not spectacular, but a proper little peak that delivers on its promises.
