Grey Stones Hill

Climbing up from the Pennine moorland near Keighley, this modest summit offers proper Yorkshire Dales views without the tourist crowds you'll find on the bigger fells. The walk itself is straightforward enough - a steady pull through rough grassland and the occasional patch of heather, though the path can get boggy after rain.

From the top, you're looking out over Airedale and the textile towns below, with Pendle Hill visible on clearer days. It's not the most dramatic peak you'll tackle, but there's something satisfying about having a whole hilltop to yourself on a weekday afternoon.

Walkers who enjoy a bit of solitude will get the most from Grey Stones Hill. Families with younger children might find it a slog - there's nothing particularly engaging for little ones on the way up, and the summit itself is just rough grass and stones. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from wherever you park up.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Keighley, this makes for a decent morning's exercise before heading to the Brontë Country Park for something more family-friendly. The contrast works well - wild moorland followed by managed woodland walks.
