Wet Head Hill

The name alone should tell you what to expect up here - Wet Head Hill lives up to it on most days. This modest Pennine peak sits just outside Keighley and pulls in serious walkers year-round, though it's hardly crowded. The summit offers proper views across the moorland towards Pendle Hill and down into the Worth Valley. On a clear day you can pick out the industrial edge of Keighley town, which sounds uninspiring until you realise how much the landscape rewards that human-scale geography.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a lung-bursting climb - probably forty minutes to an hour from the nearest car park - but the boggy paths and exposed moorland mean you need decent boots and a weather eye. Families with older kids (ten plus) who don't mind muddy scrambles will find it worthwhile. Younger children might lose patience once the novelty of the moor wears off.

There's nothing at the summit except the view and a sense of having properly earned your place up there. No cafe, no facilities. Bring water.

If you're staying at any of the nearby holiday parks - Tip Top Campsite and Shay Gate Farm are within spitting distance - this makes a natural half-day walk before lunch. Bronte Country Park down the road offers something different if the weather turns foul. The whole area rewards slow exploration rather than ticking boxes, and Wet Head fits that mood perfectly. Go when the wind's up and the light's low. That's when it shows itself properly.
