Polperro

The fishing village of Polperro announces itself gradually as you descend into it - narrow lanes get narrower, whitewashed cottages crowd closer, and suddenly you're at water level staring at a proper working harbour. It's one of those places that photographs itself; the higgledy-piggledy streets, the boats bobbing about, the smell of salt and fish. You can wander the lanes for hours, duck into art galleries and tea shops, or simply sit on the quay with a pasty watching the fishing boats come and go.

Polperro pulls in the camera-toting crowd and the Instagram brigade, so expect it to be rammed in summer. Go in shoulder season - May or September - and you'll have a different experience entirely. The walk down to the village is steepish if you park at the top, and there's no road access to the harbour itself, so prams are a non-starter and young kids need to be okay with cobbles. History buffs will appreciate that this place has been a fishing port since medieval times, though most visitors come simply to soak in the atmosphere.

Tencreek Holiday Park sits just 1.8 miles away, making Polperro an easy evening stroll from your caravan pitch. If you're basing yourself further out at Waterside or the Looe Caravan Club site, it's still only a 20-minute drive. Allow two hours minimum, though you could easily spend half a day here if you're eating lunch and browsing the shops. Free to wander, naturally.
