Looe

Twin fishing villages connected by an ancient seven-arched bridge make this one of Cornwall's most photographed spots - and for good reason. The East and West Looe rivers converge here before tumbling into the sea, creating a proper working harbour that still lands fresh crab and mackerel daily. Those narrow cobbled streets climbing steeply from the quayside weren't designed for cars, which adds to the charm but makes parking a nightmare in summer.

Down at the harbour, fishing boats bob alongside pleasure craft while seagulls wheel overhead hoping for scraps. The Old Guildhall Museum tells the story of centuries of smuggling - this coastline was made for it, with hidden coves like Giggen Cove tucked between rocky headlands. A short coastal walk east brings you to Talland Sand, a lovely little beach when the tide's right, though it vanishes completely at high water.

Polperro lies just along the coast path - about a 20-minute drive but a proper trek on foot. The Model Village & Land of Legend there is well worth the detour if you've got kids in tow. For something different, Willy Wilcox Cave offers underground exploration, while Gina's Art Studio showcases local talent.

Beyond the tourist trail, Gratton Wood provides excellent walking through ancient woodland, and the nature reserve at Polcoombe offers peace away from the crowds. Getting here means the A387 from Liskeard - the nearest rail station with decent connections to Plymouth and London. Staying at one of the holiday parks like Killigarth Manor or Tencreek gives you a base to explore both the dramatic coastline and the quieter inland valleys without fighting for town centre parking every day.
