Talland Sand

Sandy toes and proper rock pools await at this cracking little cove between Looe and Polperro. Talland Sand stretches out in a gentle arc, backed by low cliffs and thankfully free from the commercial trappings that plague Cornwall's busier beaches. The sand here is proper golden stuff, and when the tide retreats it leaves behind some of the best rock pooling on this stretch of coast.

Families absolutely love it here, though you'll need to mind the little ones around the rocks. The beach faces south so it catches the sun beautifully, but that same exposure means it can get a bit choppy when the weather turns. Dog walkers have it good too - plenty of space for a proper run about.

Getting down requires a bit of a walk from the clifftop car park, but nothing too taxing. The path can get muddy after rain though, so decent shoes are worth bringing. Unlike some of Cornwall's showier beaches, Talland Sand rarely gets rammed even in peak season - perhaps because it takes a bit more effort to reach than the drive-up spots.

Staying at Killigarth Manor or Tencreek puts you practically on the doorstep, making this an easy morning expedition before the crowds wake up. Allow a good half day if you're planning to explore the coast path in either direction.
