Sclerder Abbey

The ruins of Sclerder Abbey sit on the cliffs above Looe, and you'll stumble across them if you're walking the coastal path - they're easy to miss if you don't know where to look. What remains is mainly a collection of weathered stone foundations and walls that once formed a 13th-century monastery, dissolved like so many others during Henry VIII's time. It's not a grand, intact structure like some abbey ruins you'll find elsewhere; instead it feels intimate and a bit melancholic, with the sea wind doing its work on what's left.

Historically minded visitors will find something worth the effort here - the setting itself tells the story better than a plaque ever could. Walkers pass through regularly enough that the ground is well-trodden, and it makes a natural waypoint on a coastal circuit. You're looking at perhaps 20 minutes of poking about unless you're genuinely absorbed in medieval monastic life, then another 10 if you settle on the grass to take in the view.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no visitor infrastructure - bring water. The nearest base would be Looe itself, a proper fishing town with proper restaurants, or one of the surrounding holiday parks like Tencreek just 0.7 miles away if you want to be closer. It's best visited as part of a longer cliff walk rather than a standalone destination; the abbey alone isn't the draw, but as part of exploring this stretch of coast it earns its place. Spring brings the wildflowers; winter brings solitude.
