Downend

The ruins sit quietly on the hillside above Looe, easy to walk past if you're not looking for them. Downend is what's left of a medieval settlement - stone foundations, field boundaries, the occasional worked stone - spread across rough moorland where gorse and bracken have reclaimed most of the land. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-box visit.

Walking the site takes maybe 45 minutes if you're thorough, longer if you stop to work out where houses once stood. The views back towards Looe are proper decent, and on a clear day you can see right across to the coast. It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter rain turns the ground boggy.

History buffs will find it quietly absorbing - there's genuine puzzle-solving in trying to read the landscape and understand how people lived here centuries ago. Families with younger children might find it a bit of a stretch unless they're keen on archaeology or outdoor exploration. Older kids and walkers absolutely will get something from it.

If you're based at Killigarth Manor or Tencreek, both close by, Downend makes a solid half-morning walk before heading into Looe town for lunch. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's the sort of local history that actually matters - real people, real lives, now returned to the land. Worth the detour if you're in the area.
