Otter 1 is a gallery tucked away near Buckingham in Buckinghamshire, dedicated to the work of a single artist. It's the sort of place that rewards curiosity - you're looking at one person's vision across however many pieces they've chosen to show, rather than bouncing between ten different styles in one afternoon.

What you'll actually see depends entirely on who the artist is and what they're working with at the moment you visit. That's either brilliant or a bit of a gamble, depending on whether their work speaks to you. There's something refreshing about spaces like this though - no theme park energy, no crowds, just concentrated art in one room.

It works well if you're camping nearby - Hedgehog Retreat is barely two miles away, with several other sites like Silverstone Woodlands and Barton Hill Farm within five miles or so. Perfect for breaking up a park holiday with an hour or two of something different. You could easily combine it with a walk around Buckingham itself.

The catch is you'll need to check opening hours and admission details before you go - information online is thin on the ground. Don't turn up on spec. If you're the sort of traveller who enjoys small, artist-run spaces over the usual gallery circuit, it's worth tracking down. If you're after a quick family outing with guaranteed kid appeal, you might want something else.
