Newry Beach

Rocky outcrops frame this quiet stretch of sand on Anglesey's western edge, just a short drive from Holyhead. The beach faces west across the Irish Sea, making it one of those proper sunset spots that photographers bang on about - and they're not wrong. When the tide's out, there's enough firm sand for a decent walk, though it's more pebbles than golden shore. Families with small children will appreciate how sheltered it feels, tucked away from the main coastal traffic. The water's typically Welsh - bracing even in summer - but that doesn't stop the hardy locals having a splash. Dog walkers seem to have claimed this as their territory, which is no bad thing given how peaceful it keeps the place. Parking can be a bit hit and miss, especially if you're lugging beach gear from the car. Worth combining with a trip to nearby South Stack if you're making the journey from one of the holiday parks around Holyhead. Sandy Beach Caravan Park is the closest base at just under three miles away. Not the most spectacular beach on Anglesey by any stretch, but if you're after somewhere quiet to watch the world go by with a thermos of tea, Newry Beach does the job nicely.
