Beddrod Siambr Trefignath

Three ancient burial chambers stand like weathered sentinels on the wild coastline near Holyhead, marking graves that are older than Stonehenge. Trefignath Burial Chamber - that's the English name for Beddrod Siambr Trefignath - comprises a trio of Neolithic tombs dating back some 5,000 years, making this one of Wales' most significant prehistoric sites.

The largest chamber still retains its massive capstone, a proper monument to Bronze Age engineering that'll have you wondering how on earth they managed it without modern machinery. Two smaller chambers flank it, their stones now more tumbled but equally atmospheric against the Anglesey sky.

History enthusiasts will find this absolutely fascinating, though families with young children might struggle to hold their attention for more than twenty minutes. The site sits right beside the A5025, so it's dead easy to reach and makes a cracking stop if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Silver Bay or Pencraig Campsite.

What strikes you most is the sheer age of the place. Standing here, you're looking at structures built when Britain was still connected to Europe by land bridges. The setting is dramatic too - wild coastal grassland with views across to Ireland on clear days. Allow half an hour unless you're a proper archaeology buff, in which case you could easily spend longer just soaking up the ancient atmosphere.
