Maen Hir Tŷ Mawr

Standing stones don't get much more straightforward than this solitary giant in an Anglesey field. Maen Hir Tŷ Mawr - which translates roughly as 'big house standing stone' - is a proper ancient monument that's been holding its ground for thousands of years, just a few miles from Holyhead.

You'll find it accessible across farmland, though the approach can be a bit muddy depending on recent weather. The stone itself is impressive enough - around 12 feet tall and clearly shaped by human hands rather than nature. What makes it worth the walk is the sense of continuity with Bronze Age peoples who erected it here for reasons we can only guess at.
