Naughton Castle

What remains of Naughton Castle today is honestly rather modest - a squat stone keep surrounded by overgrown earthworks, the sort of place you'd walk past without noticing if you weren't looking for it. But that's rather the point. This 12th-century fortress, a few miles outside Cupar in Fife, speaks to a time when defensive architecture meant function over grandeur. The keep itself is largely ruined, though enough survives to give you a sense of the layout. You can walk the perimeter and spot the traces of the outer defences - raised banks and ditches that would have been far more formidable when properly maintained.

It's the kind of ruin that appeals to people with a genuine interest in medieval fortifications rather than those seeking Instagram moments. History buffs will spend a good hour poking about and imagining how it operated centuries ago. Kids might find it underwhelming after twenty minutes unless they're already keen on castles. The site is free and accessible, though you'll need sensible footwear as the ground gets boggy in places.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Clayton, Snugs at Logie Farm, or Larick Campsite are all within six miles - Naughton makes a reasonable morning walk rather than a destination trip. Pair it with exploring Cupar's town centre or visiting other Fife attractions in the area. Go when it's dry. The magic here is in the atmosphere and the history, not the remains themselves.
