National Trust - Mount Stewart

The gardens at Mount Stewart sprawl across 80 acres of what feels like someone's very ambitious dream - and someone did dream it, back in the 1920s. Lady Londonderry had a vision, and rather than just thinking about it over tea, she actually planted it. The result is a proper showstopper that punches well above what you'd expect to find on the Ards Peninsula, just outside Newtownards.

You get formal gardens with Mediterranean plants that shouldn't really survive this far north - yet somehow do, thanks to the microclimate. There's the Italian Garden, the Spanish Garden, a temple tucked away, and enough winding paths to keep you occupied for a solid three hours without feeling rushed. The house itself is worth a look too, though the grounds are genuinely the main event.

It works best for garden enthusiasts and anyone who likes a proper walk with actual views rather than just plodding round a loop. Families with young kids might find it a bit long unless they're the type who enjoy spotting plants and following maps. Spring and early summer are when it truly shines - autumn's pleasant enough, but you're partly there for the blooms.

National Trust admission, so there's a fee, but if you're staying at Dunroamin or Sandycove nearby, it's an easy half-day trip that genuinely justifies the drive. Allow at least two to three hours. The tearoom is decent enough for a break, and the car park rarely gets rammed even in summer. Worth the detour if gardens aren't just a nice-to-have for you.
