Ring Ditch

The Ring Ditch near Newtownards is essentially what remains of an Iron Age or Bronze Age fortified settlement - a circular earthwork that once enclosed a cluster of roundhouses. What you're looking at today is the ditch itself, now a grassy depression in the landscape that marks where residents dug their defences thousands of years ago.

It's not dramatic stuff. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards spelling everything out. You walk to it across farmland and find yourself standing in what amounts to a shallow circular trench with grassy banks - the kind of thing that might not register as significant if you didn't know what you were looking at. That said, if you're genuinely interested in Iron Age settlement patterns and how people fortified their homes in prehistoric Ulster, it's worth the trip. Archaeologists reckon this tells you something real about community life and defensive priorities in the region.

Walkers will find it a pleasant enough excuse for a countryside ramble, especially combined with other archaeological sites in the Ards Peninsula. The nearest caravan parks - Dunroamin in Millisle and Sandycove just across the way - make decent bases if you're combining this with broader exploration of the area.

Allow maybe 30 minutes here, less if you're not into archaeology. Don't expect much signposting or facilities. Go if you're a Bronze Age enthusiast or serious about tracking down every significant site in County Down. Skip it if you need something more visually impressive.
