Stewart Hill

Stewart Hill rises above the Ards Peninsula just outside Newtownards, offering views across County Down that stretch all the way to the Mourne Mountains on a clear day. It's not a dramatic climb - you're looking at maybe twenty minutes from the car park to the summit - but the perspective you gain over Belfast Lough and the surrounding farmland makes it worthwhile.

The walk itself is straightforward, with a decent track that local joggers seem to favour. There's a small cairn at the top and enough space to sit and properly take in the landscape. In winter, when the trees are bare, the sight lines are even better. You'll spot Scrabo Tower over towards Newtownards itself, which gives you a sense of how this hill sits within the wider geography.

This is solid territory for a brisk morning out with the family before heading to one of the nearby caravan parks like Dunroamin or Sandycove. Kids will manage the ascent without complaint, and there's something satisfying about reaching a proper viewpoint without needing to commit half the day to it. History types might appreciate the Bronze Age cairn that sits here, though there's precious little interpretation on site.

The real strength of Stewart Hill is its honesty. It doesn't pretend to be something it isn't - just a decent local summit with rewards proportional to the effort. Worth the detour if you're staying on the peninsula, but don't rearrange your itinerary to get here.
