Millisle Lagoon Park And Garden

The lagoon at Millisle is one of those places that rewards a quiet morning visit more than a rushed afternoon trip. It's a shallow freshwater reserve ringed by grassland and scrubby vegetation - the sort of spot where you'll actually see birds rather than just hear them mentioned. Waders probe the mudflats, terns dive for fish, and if you're lucky, you might catch sight of something rarer blown in from the Irish Sea.

This works best for twitchers and patient nature photographers. Families with young children might manage an hour before restlessness sets in - there's a walk round the perimeter, but it's low-key stuff, no café or visitor centre to break things up. The real appeal is the quiet. Newtownards sits just inland, but out here feels properly removed.

Free to visit, as far as anyone can tell. Best done early morning or late afternoon when light's decent and wildlife activity peaks. Allow 90 minutes if you're actually paying attention to what's about. Winter brings migrating geese; spring and autumn are migration seasons when things get lively.

If you're caravan-based at Dunroamin just down the road - literally 10 minutes' walk - this makes an easy morning outing before heading to Scrabo Tower or Newtownards town centre. Sandycove and Springvale are further out, but still reasonable driving distance. It's the sort of addition to a holiday rather than a destination in itself, but that's precisely why it works. No crowds, proper birdsong, and space to think.
