National Trust - Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Estate

The Chiltern Hills roll out beneath your feet here, and that's rather the point of Dunstable Downs. This National Trust estate sprawls across 250 acres of proper countryside - chalk grassland, ancient woodland, the works - just east of Dunstable town. You get sweeping views across three counties on a clear day, which alone makes the walk worthwhile.

It's a paragliders' paradise, genuinely. On any decent afternoon you'll see them launching off the ridge, riding thermals like it's nothing. But you don't need a parachute to enjoy it. There are walking trails threading through the estate, ranging from gentle twenty-minute loops to proper hikes that'll take you across the hills and into neighbouring woodland. The paths are well-maintained and signposted, so you won't get lost.

Families find it works well - kids can run about on the open grassland without much risk, and there's enough space that crowds don't feel suffocating even at weekends. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Iron Age fort remains scattered about, though you need to know what you're looking for. Walkers genuinely get the most from it, though.

Free access, which is a bonus. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're doing anything beyond a quick viewpoint stop. The estate forms a natural hub for exploring the wider Chilterns - Merlin Farm Camping sits just 1.3 miles away near Whipsnade Zoo, making it convenient if you're basing yourself locally. Spring and early autumn are best - less muddy than winter, less crowded than peak summer.
