Hippos- Whipsnade Zoo

The hippos at Whipsnade Zoo are genuinely impressive - these massive creatures spend most of their day wallowing in their pool, occasionally surfacing with that distinctive snort that makes kids squeal every single time. You get a proper close-up view from the walkway, and there's something oddly mesmerizing about watching a three-tonne animal move through water with surprising grace.

Whipsnade itself is a sprawling drive-through and walk-through zoo near Dunstable, so the hippo enclosure is just one part of a much larger day out. Families usually allow at least four to five hours here, though you can easily stretch that to a full day if you're not rushing. The hippos are most active in the morning before the heat really kicks in - if you arrive after midday in summer, you might just see them submerged with eyes and ears above water.

It's the kind of place where young kids (say, five to twelve) genuinely get excited, though teenagers might find it a bit slow-paced unless they're into wildlife photography. The walk between enclosures involves some hills, so factor that in if you've got pushchairs or anyone with mobility issues.
