Giraffes- Whipsnade Zoo

The giraffes at Whipsnade Zoo are reason enough to spend a day here, even if you're not planning to see the rest of the animals. There's something properly humbling about standing near creatures that tall - their long necks arch impossibly high as they reach for leaves, and you realise just how much space they need to feel comfortable. Whipsnade itself is one of the UK's largest open-air zoos, spread across 600 acres near Dunstable, so the giraffes aren't cramped into a corner like they might be elsewhere.

The experience works best if you've got a decent block of time - at least half a day, ideally more if you're bringing kids. The zoo is set out in a way that means proper walking, which is either brilliant if you like that sort of thing or a bit exhausting if you don't. You'll spot the giraffes grazing in their enclosure, and the sight of them against the Hertfordshire landscape is genuinely striking. They're far more active in the early morning and late afternoon, so time your visit accordingly if you want to watch them actually do something.

If you're camping nearby - and there's Merlin Farm just 1.5 miles away, or several others within a few miles - you can make this part of a proper countryside break. The zoo isn't free admission, so factor that into your budget. It's worth it for the giraffes alone, but combining it with the wider park visit and the nearby Chiltern Hills walks makes for a solid few days away from London.
