Tiger - Whipsnade Zoo

The tigers at Whipsnade Zoo are the real draw if you're passing through Hertfordshire. These are proper big cats - watching one pace alongside the glass feels genuinely close, and the sheer scale of them hits differently than any nature documentary. Whipsnade sprawls across the Chiltern Hills east of Dunstable, and it's far more than just the tigers. You've got giraffes, rhinos, and all the usual suspects, but the big cats section holds its own.

The zoo works brilliantly if you've got kids aged five upwards - younger ones might find bits tedious, but a day here easily fills four to five hours without feeling rushed. There's enough walking to tire them out properly, and the Chiltern setting means the views across the hills break up what could otherwise be a fairly standard zoo experience. It's not free, and you'll want to check their website for current admission prices and opening hours before you head over.

If you're camping locally - and there's no shortage of sites within spitting distance, especially Merlin Farm just 1.3 miles away - it makes a solid half or full day trip. The zoo pairs well with walking the Chilterns themselves if you've got the energy. Go midweek if you can. Weekends get rammed, and you'll spend half your time queuing rather than actually looking at the animals.
