Nant Gwrtheyrn

The valley gets genuinely windswept up here on the Llyn Peninsula, and Nant Gwrtheyrn is precisely the sort of place that makes you understand why. A language and heritage centre tucked into a former slate quarry village, it sits in a proper gorge between Pwllheli and the tip of the peninsula - the kind of location that feels properly remote even though you've only driven twenty minutes from the coast.

What you're looking at is a restored Welsh-language community space built into an actual slate-quarrying settlement. The buildings themselves tell the story - grey stone, tight-packed against the valley sides, with the landscape doing most of the talking for you. If you're into industrial heritage or Welsh culture, it's worth the detour. Language learners sometimes base themselves here for immersive courses, which tells you something about its authenticity.

The walk down into the valley is the thing though. Steep enough to remind your calves it exists, with proper views across the gorge once you're in the bottom. Budget a couple of hours if you're actually going to look around rather than just poking your head in.

It works well as a half-day stop if you're camping nearby - Away From It All glamping is only three miles away, and Gyrn Ddu Campsite even closer. The area's quiet enough that you could easily spend a few days between here, Pwllheli's beaches, and the walks around the peninsula. Not a crowded spot, which is either exactly what you want or a sign to go somewhere with more facilities. Depends what you're after.
