Moel Gwynnus

The walk up Moel Gwynnus from Pwllheli is deceptively straightforward - it's only 559 metres, but don't mistake height for effort. The summit rewards you with proper views across the Llyn Peninsula towards Snowdonia and out to the Irish Sea on a clear day. Most people bag it in under two hours return, which makes it ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Llwyn Ffynnon or Gyrn Ddu and want a half-day outing.

It's a hill for walkers rather than families with small children - the path is well-trodden but steep in places, and there's nothing at the top except the view and a bit of peace and quiet. That's rather the point, mind. On a decent morning you'll have the place virtually to yourself, which is increasingly rare. The real appeal is the sense of having earned it without needing all day.

Accessibility-wise, there's limited parking near the trailhead, so arrive early or go midweek if you can. The local area around Pwllheli offers enough to make it part of a longer stay - the coastal walks and beaches keep families occupied. If you're camping at Aberafon or Gimblet Rock, you're close enough for a morning scramble without committing to a full expedition. Clear weather is essential; on a grey day it's just a slog.
