Moelyci

A proper scramble up rough moorland brings you to this 389-metre summit overlooking the Menai Strait. The views from Moelyci stretch across to Snowdonia's peaks and down to the waters that separate Anglesey from the mainland - well worth the effort on a clear day. Getting to the top requires decent boots and a bit of route-finding skills, as there's no waymarked path through the heather and bracken. The terrain can be boggy in places, particularly after rain. Experienced walkers will appreciate the solitude - this isn't Snowdon, so you're unlikely to meet crowds even in summer. Families with young children might find the pathless ascent challenging, but teenagers who fancy a proper adventure will love the freedom of picking their own route. Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the nearest parking spots near Bangor. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and offers a cracking panoramic view that takes in Caernarfon Castle on a good day. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers and waterproofs even if it looks fine when you set off.
