Meugher

Getting to the top of Meugher is a proper slog, but the views across Wharfedale make every gasping breath worthwhile. This moorland peak sits above Skipton, part of that sprawling limestone country where the Pennines start to show their teeth. The walk up is steep and relentless - no messing about with gentle gradients here. Your legs will know about it.

What you get for your effort is a 360-degree panorama that stretches for miles. On a clear day you can see right across the Yorkshire Dales, and when the light's right, the whole landscape seems to shift colour as clouds pass overhead. It takes roughly ninety minutes to reach the summit from the nearest car park, though that depends entirely on your fitness and how many times you stop for water.

This one's for walkers rather than casual strollers. Families with older kids will manage fine if they're properly geared up, but toddlers and the less mobile should probably give it a miss. The terrain's rough moorland all the way - no maintained paths, proper boots essential. There's no café at the top, no visitor centre, just wind and sky and the satisfaction of having earned your view.

Stay at Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the valley and you've got the perfect base for tackling Meugher alongside other Dales walks. It's the sort of walk that sticks with you, all aching legs and wide skies.
