Low Force Waterfall

The Tees plunges over Low Force with genuine drama - water thundering down dark rock into a pool so clear you can see the riverbed. It's the kind of waterfall that stops you mid-walk, even if you weren't expecting much.

You reach it via the Pennine Way near Middleton-in-Teesdale, about six miles south of Bishop Auckland. The walk down to the falls takes twenty minutes or so through moorland that opens up properly when you hit the riverside path. In spate after rain, Low Force is genuinely impressive - those darker rocks glisten, the roar carries, and the spray kicks up enough to wet your coat. In dry months it's still worth seeing but less theatrical.

This isn't a destination on its own. Rather, it's the excuse for a proper riverside walk. Families with older kids handle it fine. Younger ones might find the scramble down to the pool edge a bit fiddly, and there's water - you need to watch them. The walk's straightforward enough but exposed if the weather turns.

It costs nothing and takes roughly an hour all told if you're not hanging about. Early morning beats midday for photos and peace. Summer's crowded. Spring or autumn, when the light's angled properly and you've got the path mostly to yourself, feels best.

Stay at Leekworth or Mickleton Mill - both solid caravan parks within striking distance - and use Low Force as part of a longer Teesdale loop. It's the cherry on top of a good day out, not the whole cake.
