Lodge Hill

Getting up Lodge Hill takes about forty minutes from Hebden Bridge, and it's a proper leg-stretcher rather than a casual stroll. The moorland at the top opens out to genuinely decent views across the Calderdale Valley - you can see why walkers make the trek up here on decent weather days.

It's one of those peaks that rewards the effort without being dramatic. The path starts reasonably clear but gets boggy in places, so waterproof boots aren't optional. The summit itself is moorland plateau rather than a dramatic point, which some find a bit underwhelming after the climb. Others prefer that - there's something honest about a moorland top without the crowds you get at more famous spots.

This works best for walkers who know what they're after. If you're staying at Old Chamber Camping or Hebden Bridge Caravan Club just down the road, it's an obvious half-day walk from base. Families with younger legs might find the bog sections frustrating, though teenagers who enjoy the outdoors will get something from it. History enthusiasts will find more to occupy them in Hebden Bridge itself - the town's textiles past is far more compelling than anything up on the hill.

Timing matters. Early morning in summer gives you the clearest views and fewer muddy patches. Avoid after heavy rain unless you're after a properly grimy experience. Allow two hours return including a proper look-around at the top. Free, naturally - it's moorland access.
