Lee Dam

Water stretches out between high moorland banks, calm and reflective on a decent day. Lee Dam sits above Hebden Bridge, one of those proper Yorkshire reservoirs that catches you by surprise - not flashy, just functional and rather lovely. You're looking at a straightforward walk around the perimeter, taking in views back towards the Pennines and across to Colden Valley. The dam itself is modest compared to some of the bigger reservoirs around here, but that's rather the point. It's intimate.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The route's manageable - nothing brutal - and you can tick it off in an hour or so depending on your pace and how many times you stop to breathe in the views. Families with decent-aged kids will find it worthwhile; younger ones might flag if you're expecting a full circuit. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. The water attracts decent variety, particularly in autumn and spring migration.

Access appears to be free, though I'd suggest checking locally before you head up. It's the sort of spot that benefits from being part of a wider Hebden Bridge expedition rather than a destination in itself - pair it with a walk down to Hardcastle Crags or a wander through the town's gallery scene. Both Old Chamber Camping and Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sit within a few miles, making it a natural addition to a park-based holiday in the area. Weather-dependent, mind - moorland reservoirs aren't magic in drizzle - but on a clear morning it's absolutely worth the drive out from town.
