Leckhampstead Wood

The woodland around Leckhampstead, just outside Buckingham, is proper walking country - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Ancient beech and oak dominate the canopy, and in spring the floor erupts with bluebells that stop you mid-stride. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. You're here to walk, to breathe in the cool air, and to let the kids burn off whatever energy remains after a week of campsite adventures.

The footpaths wind through without much fanfare, taking you through mixed woodland where you might spot deer if you're quiet enough. Allow a couple of hours for a decent loop - nothing too demanding, but enough to feel like proper exercise rather than a gentle stroll. The terrain is manageable for families with older children and anyone who doesn't mind the occasional muddy patch.

It works brilliantly as a day-trip detour from the nearby campsites - Silverstone Woodlands and Windmill Farm are both within a few miles. Combine it with a morning at the forest and an afternoon elsewhere in the area, rather than banking on it being an all-day draw. Don't expect dramatic viewpoints or café stops. What you get instead is quiet woodland, a genuine escape from the tourist trail, and the simple pleasure of a good walk through proper English forest. Best visited after rain when the ground is soft underfoot - less muddy than you'd think, and the smell is worth the trip alone.
