Langerton Hill

The walk up Langerton Hill rewards you with proper moorland views across the Yorkshire Dales - nothing fancy, just the kind of sweeping landscape that makes you understand why people come back to North Yorkshire year after year. It's a moderate climb from the Skipton side, taking the best part of an hour to reach the top depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

Once up there, you get that rare quiet that moorland offers. On clear days the visibility stretches for miles - you can pick out the valley contours and spot other peaks dotting the horizon. It's the sort of place where walkers genuinely come to think, not to tick off a box on their phone.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the moorland a bit relentless - there's no dramatic summit building or café to break things up, just grass and views. If your lot need more action between stops, Howgill Lodge sits just 2.3 miles away and makes a decent base for the week. Bolton Abbey Estate and the Wharfedale Caravan Club sites are within four miles as well, both well-placed for exploring this corner of the Dales.

Go midweek if you can. Weekends draw a steady trickle of walkers, but Tuesday or Wednesday mornings you'll likely have the moorland largely to yourself. The walk works year-round, though winter can make the final push muddy and a bit treacherous underfoot.
