Lang Camp

Ancient earthworks scatter across this moorland site just outside Scarborough, where Iron Age inhabitants once made their home around 2,000 years ago. Lang Camp's circular ramparts and ditches are still clearly visible today, though you'll need a proper walking boot and a bit of imagination to appreciate what you're seeing.

Archaeology enthusiasts will find this one rewarding - the defensive earthworks are well-preserved and the views across the Yorkshire countryside are genuinely lovely. Families with younger children might find it a bit abstract, though older kids who've done Romans at school often get quite into spotting the ancient boundaries.

Expect to spend about an hour here if you're having a proper look around. The site sits on open moorland, so dress for the weather and bring layers - it gets proper windy up there. No facilities or interpretation boards, so brush up on your Iron Age history beforehand.

This makes a decent addition to a North Yorkshire coast holiday, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Parkdean Resorts Cayton Bay or Haven Primrose Valley. It's an easy drive from Scarborough and works well combined with a trip to nearby Filey - though don't expect to fill a whole day here unless you're a serious archaeology buff.
