North Cotes Plantation

Dense woodland stretches along the North Yorkshire coast here, offering a proper escape from the summer crowds that pack Scarborough's beaches. North Cotes Plantation sits between the main coastal road and the sea, creating a surprisingly wild corridor where you can lose yourself among towering pines and mature deciduous trees.

Dog walkers will have a field day - the network of informal paths means you can easily spend an hour or two exploring without retracing your steps. Kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're the type who love building dens and spotting wildlife. The canopy filters the light beautifully on bright days, though it can feel rather gloomy when the Yorkshire weather turns.

Birders should bring binoculars. The mix of coastal and woodland habitats attracts a decent variety of species, particularly during migration periods in spring and autumn. You'll often have the place largely to yourself, which is refreshing when staying at one of the busy holiday parks nearby like Haven Primrose Valley or Reighton Sands.
