Staxton Hill

Standing at 515 feet above sea level, this rounded chalk hill offers proper sweeping views across the Vale of Pickering to the north and the Yorkshire Wolds rolling away to the south. On clear days you can see all the way to the North York Moors and catch glimpses of Scarborough's coastline glinting in the distance.

The climb itself isn't much to write home about - it's more of a gentle walk up grassy slopes than any sort of challenging hike. Takes about twenty minutes from the nearest car parking spot, though finding somewhere to leave the car can be a bit hit and miss along the country lanes.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from Staxton Hill, particularly those who appreciate big skies and rolling countryside rather than dramatic peaks. Families with older children might enjoy it as part of a longer day out, but little ones could find it underwhelming.

Best visited in late afternoon when the light catches the patchwork fields below, or early morning for that crisp, clear air. The hill works well as a quick detour if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Cayton Bay or heading between Scarborough and the Yorkshire Wolds. It's not spectacular enough to plan a whole trip around, but worth the short walk for the panoramic payoff at the top.
