Lan Fraith

The walk up Lan Fraith rewards you with proper sweeping views across Cardigan Bay and the Ceredigion coast. It's not a particularly demanding climb from Aberystwyth - most people can manage it in under two hours return - but the effort feels worth it once you're up there, especially on a clear day when you can see right across to Pembrokeshire.

This is walkers' territory, plain and simple. If you're after dramatic vistas and don't mind a bit of a trudge on moorland paths, you'll get on well with it. The peak itself sits at a decent height without being exhausting, making it ideal for families with older kids or anyone wanting a genuine hill walk without the mountaineering commitment. Younger children might find it a slog, though - it's the kind of place where the novelty wears off if the legs are tired.

There's no visitor centre or facilities up here, which is rather refreshing. It's free to access, naturally, and you can walk it any time. Aim for morning or early afternoon to avoid the afternoon clouds rolling in off the bay and obscuring everything you've just climbed for.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks near Aberystwyth - Woodlands or Brynllwyd are closest at around three miles out - Lan Fraith makes a proper half-day outing. Pair it with exploring Aberystwyth's seafront and you've got a decent day sorted. It's not the sort of peak that dominates your whole visit, but it's exactly the kind of hill you're pleased you went up once you're standing on top.
